La Befana is an old woman in Italy associated with the Feast of the Epiphany, right after Christmas. She is usually portrayed as a hag riding a broomstick through the air wearing a black shawl and is covered in soot , who swoops down chimneys to bring good children gifts, and bad children coal. Another Christian legend takes a slightly darker tone as La Befana was an ordinary woman with a child, however, her child died, and her resulting grief maddened her. There are variations on the story and Befana's origins are said to lie in ancient pagan practices.
